Shipping Hardcover Books

I received a book in the mail and it came in a rigid cardboard package. It was probably the hardest to open package I’ve ever received. There were no easy tear pull tabs, just one perforated line down the middle of the mailer. So I proceeded to rip the mailer in half along this perforation. As I ripped, I also ripped the invoice in half and part of the paper cover on the book! I ended up having to break out the scissors to get the remainder open as the book was very tightly packed and this mailer was not going to just rip in half as intended. What a pain.

I understand going with paper as it’s recyclable and I understand going with a rigid paperboard or cardboard package for extra protection of the hardcover book binding. But there has got to be a better way.

Luckily PAC was listening. Santa’s Busy Helpers – Good News for the Economy

When it comes to shipping packages, no other time of year comes close to the volume shipped in the month of December.

On December 13th, FedEx expects to ship 17 million packages in one day, or more than double their normal daily volume.

UPS will ship close to 120 million packages the week leading up to Christmas, and the USPS will ship 800 million letters and packages on their busiest day this year.

These increases in volume, some the best in a decade, are all directly tied to one of the best Cyber Monday shopping days since the practice was started.  It is estimated that $1 billion, that’s with a “b”, dollars was spent on Cyber Monday this year.  That is great news for e-tailers, shippers, and shipping material suppliers.

With that kind of volume going through the system, it really tests the integrity of a package.  You can bet all the companies that do a lot of shipping during the holidays, have vetted out their sources and will closely monitor the results.  No one wants to be the company delivering that hard to get Xbox disc broken, only a few days before Christmas.

When it comes to providing the best customer experience, the companies that get their products delivered on time and undamaged, will be the ones getting repeat customers next year.

The PACJacket System

As most people are making out a list of what they desire this upcoming holiday season, my recent list, up until last week, included the “pros” and “cons” of buying a new furnace and air conditioning system to replace the dated systems that exist in my home today.

My biggest “pro” is not to spend “Black Friday”, literally, in my house as well as a “Black Saturday” followed by a “Black Sunday” and so on.  The biggest “con” I have is probably the obvious and that is the big price tag that I will have to pay in one lump sum.

I wanted to document to all of you my recent experience that allowed me to cross at least one thing off my list.  I had my pilot light go off for the second time in the last few months and after numerous unsuccessful tries in lighting and ducking I knew it was going to take a skilled professional to come in and try to get my 40 year old furnace fired up.  He cleaned the pilot and told me what I already knew; my furnace was getting closer to its end.  To top things off, he recommended that I replace my AC system as that is close to going and it would be more cost effective to replace both at one time.  He had contacted his office and set up a time for a sales person to come out the following day and do a “consultation” with
me.

The next day the sales rep came to my house.  The first question he asked was what I was looking to accomplish by the end of his presentation.  I said I wanted to know if it was worthwhile for me to purchase a new furnace and air conditioning system and if I did make the purchase when do they expect this lump sum of money and would it be needed in an expedited fashion.

He sat down and professionally explained to me why his company was the organization I should choose to partner with when making such a large investment based upon their past history of success, high level of customer service, quality of systems they represent, and their guarantee to stand behind those systems with better than industry standard labor and part warranties.

I quickly asked how much a new furnace and AC system would cost me. He politely said that there are many options available and he would need to conduct his audit so he could make the best suggestion for my particular home.  The sales person conducted an audit of my house by checking on my current systems, including thermostats, then taking measurements of every room in the house. At the same time he was measuring the rooms he wanted to make sure I had ample vents and returns which could limit options available to me.

After conducting his audit and writing down all his notes, he presented a couple different options that he felt would best meet my home’s needs.  He was quick to mention that every home is built a little differently so some adjustments would need to be made to bring everything up to code to meet today’s requirements of the city I reside in.  He knew the systems he recommended provided ample BTUs and Seers to heat and cool my home effectively.  The options he presented were name brands that I was not familiar with nor had much to reference.  I knew two big names because that is what my father and his father knew.  When it came down to it, I did not know if these two particular companies were industry leaders or simply companies that specialize in just marketing their names rather than investing in their products. The sales person pointed out that being around a long time does not have a direct correlation with having the latest technology.

The sales person took my monthly bills for gas during the cold months and electricity during the hot months and calculated what my savings would be for each month when amortized over a year by using a percentage formula based upon the levels of efficiency in the units he provided as options.  He made a strong argument as to how quickly my ROI would be for making the decision to replace the old systems sooner rather than later knowing we face some cold Midwest winter months rapidly approaching.

He did hit a hot button for me when he was talking about efficiency.  I do feel we must all do our part to help create a safe and healthy environment for generations to come by using less energy and reducing our carbon footprint but I have to admit the tax credits available to those going with higher efficiency systems plus enhanced savings per month made the higher priced systems more attractive.

I went into our meeting thinking I wanted to spend the bare amount, if spend anything at all.  I found myself fixated on the systems that were not the least nor most expensive but one right in the middle that I believe met all of my needs and wants.  I still had the concern about the large sum of money that it would take to pay for these two systems.

The sales person listened to my concerns and presented me with an option to either take a small discount to pay for both systems in their entirety up front or a 12 month same as cash deal that I would finance through their bank.  The 12 month same as cash deal was exactly what I needed to help close the deal.  In a couple days, I will be the proud owner of a new furnace and air conditioning unit that will be supplied by a company that will be dedicated to making sure I have systems that will meet my satisfaction and provide excellent service to support the systems they put in my house.

I realized after all said and done, I now know what it is like to be the proud owner of a PACJacket System.  This all sounds too familiar.

So You Want to Get Noticed!

Choose All Three

The saying used to be “Choose Any Two” and the third one would be a consequence of your two choices.  Selecting high quality and high service would yield a high price.  If you wanted a low price formerly you would have to sacrifice either service or quality.  This is generally not true in today’s marketplace.  It is assumed that quality and service will be good and price will be low or competitive.  The global economy that we are in today has worked out well for consumers.  Today you can generally “Choose All Three”.

A Little Stretch Wrap Will Fix That

When you think about packaging, what are the first thoughts that come to mind … boxes, cushion wrap, tape, packing paper and maybe peanuts?  But what is the one thing that is more versatile than any of those items … and most of us forget about?  Stretch Wrap.  I know, you might say, “that’s the stuff they use to wrap pallets”, or “isn’t that what aunt Alice used to wrap her midsection with to fit into that dress?”  Yes and no.  It is used in industrial applications for pallets; and that was Saran Wrap for Aunt Alice.

Everyone knows what Saran Wrap is – well Stretch Wrap is Saran Wrap on a massive dose of steroids.  Millions of pallets in warehouses all over the world are wrapped with Stretch Wrap.  In fact, the US uses 3 Billion (that is “B”) pounds of this stuff every year … but it is not just for pallets!!

Stretch Wrap is an often overlooked material with BIG potential.

Have you ever had several items you were trying to carry and just couldn’t seem to manage the awkward shapes and sizes?   … a little stretch wrap will fix that.
Have you started to move a dresser or cabinet only to have the doors pop open … a little stretch wrap will fix that.

My wife has taken this to a whole new level.  The items in her carry on are a neck pillow, a good book, her purse and a 5” roll of stretch wrap.  What could be better for bundling ANYTHING and it sticks to itself!!
So the next time you are working around the house or getting on a plane don’t forget the STRETCH WRAP.  Remember … a little stretch wrap will fix that.

Buy Right and Save Money

There is a lot of commonality between different types of packaging, whether we are talking about packaging like the type PAC manufactures (i.e. flat and bubble poly mailers and paperboard envelopes), or other types of flexible and rigid packaging such as plastic and paper shopping bags, corrugated boxes, folding cartons, paper envelopes, plastic containers, adhesive tape, etc.

Basic packaging components and features include:
- Substrate
- Construction
- Integrated features (i.e. closing & opening systems)
- Printing
- Inner packaging
- Outer packaging

Understanding how these common packaging components contribute to the functionality and cost of your packaging, based on your particular needs, will save you money.   This can be accomplished by spending some time with your packaging representative to discuss the physical and performance properties of the key packaging components that account for the majority of the cost of your particular package.

Understanding what you need, and making sure you buy the “right” product that fits those needs, will save you money and the unnecessary direct and indirect expenses associated with poor or excessive product performance.  Avoid buying a product that “more” or “less” meets your needs as this approach will definitely cost you more.

What do You Think of me, Your Customer?

When I get a package in the mail I am always excited!

It’s funny how the quality of package my item arrives in tells me something about the company that sent it to me.

A few weeks ago I received a book in a brown envelope that was not only hard to open but when I finally got it open, brown fuzzy stuff fell out all over the place.  The brown fuzzy stuff clean-up definitely burst my bubble of enthusiasm for the book I had received!

Then to my surprise there was another thin plastic package with a dull gray exterior sloppily melted together with a distorted form inside.  It was like Fort Knox to open – no handy tabs to pull – I had to get out my sharpest shears to break into that baby!  I’m lucky I didn’t slice a hole in my new book!

The most infamous package I have received lately was this large envelope with newspaper crunched up and stuffed around the item I ordered.  To top it off my name and address were handwritten in barely legible writing.  The return address was simply a street address, a city, state and zip code.  I took pause for a moment to wonder if I should get the bomb squad to assist me in opening it.

In each case I couldn’t help but think these vendors thought I wouldn’t care about how my item got there as long as it was on time.  For me their packaging was a lasting first impression and a statement about what they thought of me, their customer. Our PAC line of solutions could have made my lasting impression a POSITIVE impression!!

Bubbleman vs. Ichiro

So I come home from work the other night and my boys are playing upstairs.  One is holding an Ichiro bobble head doll and the other is holding 2 Bubbleman bobble head dolls.  The battle was on!

“Dad, who do you think will win the battle?” 

…Suddenly I am in “random thoughts of a packing guy” mode!

This is a hard one.  Ichiro is amazing! He has batting titles, golden gloves, MVP’s, future 1st ballot Hall of Famer.  But I then think to myself, wait a second, Ichiro is getting old, he is all of 38 now, slowing down, hitting under 300, not getting his standard 200+ hits this year, can’t jump as high as he is used to, is not 100% recyclable and he is going against 2 Bubbleman bobble heads not one.

Then I think of Bubbleman and the adventures he has had providing countless packaging solutions (saving money, time and promoting “green” products) for people and businesses worldwide. Not to mention the fact that his cape is made of PAC Worldwide bubble that is 100% recyclable, he can FLY, he’s smart and there are 2 of them.  This one is a no brainer…

“Dad!  Who do you think will win the battle?”
