Flexible Packaging Solutions Leader Looks to Build on Legacy of Innovation and Excellence
From its humble beginnings as a broker of corrugated packaging containers to its evolution as a global leader in flexible packaging solutions, PAC Worldwide has reached many milestones throughout its existence. This year marks its latest: PAC is turning 50.
The global enterprise today bears little resemblance to the one founded in 1975, when it was known as PAC National. What hasn’t changed is the vision, hard work, innovation, and a belief in the power of people that have defined its legacy.
A key inflection point for the company occurred in 1997, when PAC started manufacturing its own line of poly mailers, bubble mailers, and poly rolls from a newly opened plant in the Cincinnati area. That was the same year the company established a plant outside of Mexico City to produce paperboard mailers and security bags.
The 2006 rollout of the PACjacket®, an end-to-end automated packaging system for poly mailers was another game changer. Designed for high-volume fulfillment companies, the all-in-one system substantially increased production throughputs while decreasing labor costs.
International expansion continued in 2007 with the opening of a new manufacturing facility in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The overseas investment coincided with the decision to re-brand the company as PAC Worldwide.
In 2015, the business began ramping up its North American production capacity. A manufacturing plant was built in Phoenix to reduce shipping times for customers in the western U.S. Three years later, PAC opened a second Mexican production facility for flexible food packaging solutions, along with a large plant in Pennsylvania that serves as the hub of East Coast operations.
As the packaging industry has embraced the importance of sustainability, PAC has been quietly leading by example. In 2020, the company created more than 175 million pounds of new demand for post-consumer resin (PCR), exceeding all internal goals. Since then, it has also introduced a number of eco-friendly products such as the Ecojacket® and Ecojacket® Max, both certified curbside recyclable paper mailers, as well as the Eco PACjacket®, the fully automated system that delivers the same performance benefits and efficiencies as its poly facing sibling.
Jim Boshaw, CEO of PAC Worldwide, said, “Through the years, our propensity to say ‘yes’ and our innovative spirit have allowed us to work with and support some of the most recognizable companies in the e-commerce, courier, and fulfillment markets. Our business has evolved into a global entity, but our mission has endured: to protect the things people care about.”
